YDS currently rides in a Diono Rainier in our SUVs. He’s comfy there, and I love the seat. I tried the Rainier in the X3 during our test drive and it didn’t seem like a great fit; however there wasn’t enough time to really do a full install with the AA. The passenger seat had to be pretty far up. I’d be the passenger and I’m not too sure about riding with my knees against the dash. ODS is in the back seat too (Britax Frontier, harnessed, 46 and 46″ with a long torso at nearly 5yo; not ready for a booster due to immaturity), so not enough space for me to fit in the back on a regular basis. YDS is 21 months. At 18 months, he was slightlyunder 50th percentile for height and weight, 24 and 32″. I’m hoping to RF (rear facing) until he’s at least 3 yo, but preferably longer if I can.
Some people will say that you can just go to your fire station or police department. You can It best to look it up because it will tell you where you can get it checked, whether you can drop by/if they have a car seat check once a month or every couple of months/if you have to make an appointment. I live in a metro with 2.4 million people and we only have 21 places to get seats checked. Out of those 21 places, we have 2 you can stop by any day of the week at any time, 2 you can make an appointment for any time during their business hours, and the rest either have monthly/bimonthly/quarterly car seat check fairs. I had to set my appointment 24 days in advance because the children hospital was so booked out. I would suggest figuring out how to get yours checked soon.
Thank you for pointing this out, had it fail on my last BMW right after warranty expired. The cost to fix was so bad it became the down payment on my model S at the time. Convinced my wife to dump her Jeep and we now left ICE behind never going back. Everyone says I’m crazy and instantly defends BMW when I mention this to them. My son is 2.5 and we just swapped his marathon out for a Radian rxt. We were planning on swapping my daughter out to a Radian as well. There is a lot of discussion in various forums about how this gear does not ever seem to turn all the way around and you can fix it by simply rotating the gear to the unused portion (a potential free fix). I cannot speak to whether that is a reliable long term fix since I did not try that. You can see from my photos however, that it indeed does not look like one side of the gear that still has the light green lubricant on it was ever touched or used by the worm gear,so take that for whatever it’s worth.
My experience (and decision) was that if I was going to spend an afternoon underneath the car removing the actuator motor and taking it apart I did not want to risk the free fix failing at some point and having to do it all over again. I believe it’s well worth the $50 $100 to purchase a new gear and not worry about it for another 80k miles or more. As for why it doesn’t fit I’m not 100% sure what the problem is. But it’s almost like the latches aren’t long enough so when you push them in they can’t reach to latch on. The angle in which the seat would sit on doesn’t seem right either. She never told me why they aren’t compatible, just that the quality control people did tests and that the latch system doesn’t work with certain BMW’s.
If you charge it home it really depends on what you are replacing it with. Many people trade in hybrids or other eco cars for these, which do not run on premium. The fuel savings are there, if you charge at home, but at current gas prices it isn a huge difference. The difference in tire replacement costs and insurance costs more than make up that difference in fuel savings over a more economical car.
Even in traditional American motor companies such as Ford, they are using turbochargers and other lighter but strong materials to produce the more power and efficiency with less engine and therefore less fuel consumption. (For an example, look into the new 2015 mustang. Ford offers the car with an Eco boost Turbo charged I 4 engine, a traditional v 6, and a 5.0 liter v8.) Note the similarity between the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder versions.
A note on the seats: they are some of the finest seats in all of automobiledom! From a comfort point of view there is zero reason to have any concerns, they are better than the Mercedes/BMW/Audi/VW/Infiniti seats in various cars I owned. From a sporting perspective, there is almost zero lateral support, but it is unlikely that your wife will complain about this ;).
